Terenure look to close gap in big weekend at the top

TERENURE College will be hoping they can at least close the gap on runnaway Ulster Bank leaders Lansdowne in what is set to be a mouth-watering weekend of Division 1A rugby this weekend.

Indeed, while second place Terenure travel to Dooradoyle to face fourth place Garryowen, Landsdowne make the trip to Temple Hill for, what could prove, a tricky fixture against third place Cork Constitution.

Lansdowne did have 14 points to spare over their Munster rivals when they met in Dublin back in October, but Cork will be eager to turn the tables this time around with just a point separating them from Terenure.

The Lakelands Park side won out by seven when they played host to Garryowen in October, but they also will have hopes of overtaking their opponents given that there is currently just two points between them.

Meanwhile St Mary College’s scheduled match against UCD on Friday was postponed and so they will provide the opposition to neighbours Terenure in their next match on Saturday, March 24 at Lakelands.

Sitting second from bottom in the table, the Templeville Road side will be desperate for points and the chance to avenge their 21-32 loss to Terenure back in September.

On another note St Mary’s club captain Ciaran Ruddock and Tom O’Reilly together with Terenure’s Jake Swaine, Alex Thompson, Michael Melia and Mark O’Neill all played their part in the Ireland Club XV’s thrilling 26-23 point victory over their Scottish counterparts in the recent Ulster Bank Club International at Dubarry Park.

Indeed Terenure full back Swaine was among the try scorers for Ireland with the game just 10 minutes old while his clubmate Melia was declared Man-of-the-Match.
