The Fallout Patern – Exhibition by Russian artist Andrei Molodkin

A FASCINATING exhibition by Russian artist Andrei Molodkin, which is influenced by WikiLeaks documents that were leaked in 2009 detailing the impact of a US nuclear strike on Russia, is now showing in Rua Red featuring research by IT Tallaght students.
The Fallout Pattern exhibition is housed across Rua Red’s two galleries, offering a multi-sensory experience where data sets and figures will be projected on a large stainless-steel structure in the centre of Gallery 1, while a menacing humming noise permeates the exhibition space.
Andrei, who attended art college before serving two years in the Russian army, uses biro pen throughout his work as pens were the only tools he could use to draw while in the army.
Ten 3rd year creative digital media students from IT Tallaght will be present once a week during the exhibition’s showing, where they will be carrying out research and projecting data that they’ve found relating to Irish society, like the Magdalene Laundries and the Repeal the 8th movement.
Maolíosa Boyle, the director of Rua Red, told The Echo: “It was really important for us to involve the students from IT Tallaght.
“Andrei set the students a brief, to look at things that control our lives, and the systems that are in place that affect Irish society. Part of the remit of Rua Red is that we curate work that is meaningful to the people here, and the students bring a local element to the exhibition.”
The pieces in the exhibition include a striking image of the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty on front of the Kremlin, while a series of maps that are drawn in biro and made of scaffolding keep an industrial theme throughout the exhibition.
Maolíosa said: “The maps are made of scaffolding material, so they have an industrial presence. In the centre of the space we have a stainless-steel structure, where two projectors will project the WikiLeaks fallout pattern plan showing the force of the attack and the implications of it, on the steel structure.”
Andrei Molodkin’s Fallout Pattern will be on display in Rua Red until April 6.
