“The girls have got a bit of momentum”- O’Callaghan

PEAMOUNT United manager James O’Calla-ghan believes the momentum is with his side as they bid to make it a Women’s National League and FAI Cup double this season.

Only four days after booking their place in the Só Hotels FAI Women’s Cup Final at the expense of Shelbourne, the Newcastle side moved to within one win of securing the National League crown after they trounced DLR Waves 8-0 on Sunday.

O’Callaghan’s side had the chance to wrap up the title almost two weeks ago when they played host to closest rivals Shelbourne, but they suffered a 2-1 reversal.

Yet they responded in the best possible manner when, just four days later, they beat the same opposition 2-0 in the National Cup semi finals.

Second half goals from Aine O’Gorman and Megan Smyth-Lynch proved enough to see them despatch their Dublin rivals and set up a repeat of last year’s cup final against Wexford Youths- Peamount hoping to, this time, earn a more a more favourable result when they meet in the Aviva Stadium on November 3.

“The girls showed a lot of personality in getting that win against Shels last Wednesday” said O’Callaghan.

“It wasn’t necessarily about getting to the cup final, but more about just beating Shels and getting revenge after the last match.

“But it is great for the players to get to the Aviva. It’s great for the club and a great day out for all the volunteers in the club who work so hard.

“We’re up against Wexford just like last year and hopefully we can get the win. The Aviva is a great place to get to, but not a great place to be if you lose.”

The team will be now turning their attention back to league matters this Saturday when they entertain a Cork outfit that have given them some good games this season.

Indeed they edged a 2-1 victory over them at home in their first match of the season before dishing them out a more emphatic 3-0 defeat later on in their campaign.

They will be coming inot this game off their back of their 8-0 demolition of DLR Waves at the weekend when Eleanor Ryan Doyle, Megan Smyth-Lynch, substitute Chloe Moloney and captain O’Gorman all hit the target.

“We’ve played them [Cork] twice this season and they’ve been tough games.

“Cork are a good side with a few good young internationals so it’s going to be tough.

“We’ve lost only once and drawn twice all season and it still has to come down to the final match, but that just shows you the quality of the league.

“The girls have a got bit of momentum behind them now with the win over Shels in the cup and then a good solid victory in the league against DLR.
