SHAMROCK Rovers captain Ronan Finn is adamant that the Hoops will have to take the game to Derry City when the two meet in tomorrow night’s crunch Airtricity League match in Tallaght Stadium.

The Hoops will be looking to hold on fourth place in the Premier Division having overtaken the Candystripes on the last day of action when they beat Limerick and Derry were thumped 4-0 by Dundalk.

Rovers will be coming into this match on the back of wins over the struggling Bray Wanderers and Limerick, but Derry are sure to provide a much stronger challenge, something Finn is all too aware of.

“We took six points against Bray and Limerick and envisaged that the teams around us would drop points which they did.

“We’re coming into this match on the back of two good results and now this is an opportunity for us to, I’m not going to say ‘go on a run’ because that would be disrespecting Derry.

“This is an opportunity for us to push on, but we just really have to take one game at a time and not look beyond Derry.

“We’re at home now and we’ll want to take the game to them. Derry have got a lot of footballers just like ourselves so it really bodes well for an entertaining game.

Very dangerous

“We’ll want to press them high up the pitch, but we have to be careful because they’re very dangerous going forward. We have to be defensively aware because they’ve got match winners all over the pitch.

“Even when we beat them 6-1 at home earlier in the season it was level for a good half hour, 40 minutes so we’re under no illusions as to how tough this game will be.

“They’ll definitely be up for this match especially after we overtook them in the table.

“We’ve got 15 or 16 games left to cement a European place. A lot of the teams around us will drop points and we’ll have to try and capitalise,” he added.
