Three-storey 27 classroom plans for St Thomas’s Junior School

A SCHOOL in Jobstown are seeking to demolish existing school buildings for the construction of a new building up to three-storeys high to accommodate 27 classrooms.

The Board of Management of St Thomas’ Junior National School have lodged a planning application with South Dublin County Council to demolish the existing single-storey 2,605sq.m Junior School Building.

Also seeking to tear down a single-storey 211sq.m Junior School’s ancillary structure, the applicant is hoping to construct a new, larger, two-storey building, rising to three-storeys, over 4,998sq.m.

The new school will accommodate 27 classrooms with a three-class base Special Education Needs facility with all ancillary accommodation.

The application does note that St Thomas’ Senior School does not form part of this planning application – therefore it will not be effected should the application be given the thumbs up.

In the interim, it appears the school are hoping to relocate to two single-storey temporary accommodation units totalling around 400sq.m.

Located to the south of the proposed development, the provision of the temporary accommodation units will be to facilitate the construction of the new school building.

Another aspect of the proposed development is to include renewable energy design measures, PV Panels and or heat pumps located at roof level.

The provision of a new external hard play area with two multi-use games areas at the south of the site are included in the proposal along with new school signage comprising of wall-mounted lettering on the front elevation of the new building.

Redevelopment of the existing staff car parking and set down facilities within the school site to include 40 new car parking spaces, six car set down spaces, resurfacing 22 existing car park spaces and 106 bicycle spaces are included in the application.

The board are also seeking to develop a new access road with footpaths and landscaping, repair works to the existing boundary wall with new 2.4m high metal railings along Fortunestown Road.

Replacing the existing palisade fencing with new 2.4m high railings along Kiltalown Park Road to the south and the replacement of existing pedestrian and vehicle entrance gates is also being sought.

An additional part of the proposed development includes works on the Fortunestown Road, a public road, to include five set down spaces.

Third party submissions relating to this proposed development are being accepted up to August 24, with a decision due from the local planning authority on September 14, 2021.
