Tidy Towns group demands removal of ‘ugly’ box planters

CLONDALKIN Tidy Towns (CTT) have “demanded” the removal of recently installed “ugly” box planters outside a school.

The volunteer group asked South Dublin County Council to “immediately remove four ugly black planters”, which were recently placed outside Coláiste Chilliain’s School on Old Nangor Road as part of a school street scheme.

In an email to The Echo, Anne Gill, Clondalkin Tidy Towns Committee said: “SDCC advised CTT that they will place soil in them and expect CTT to plant and maintain them which we have no intention of doing.

“These will become attractive receptacles for graffiti, weeds and illegal dumping and will detract from CTT’s hard work and efforts to keep Clondalkin an attractive place to live and work.

“SDCC claim that these planters are being placed there to prevent illegal parking yet the remaining closed road space is blocked by permanent black bollards. As they are placed so close to school, they will also be dangerous to children who may run out behind them and be unseen by passing traffic. It’s likely that the traffic calming plan may now cause more danger for children.”

The group said they have support from Clondalkin councillors for the removal.

A spokesperson for South Dublin County Council told The Echo: “The school street scheme on Old Nangor Road, Clondalkin, has only just been delivered. We are currently monitoring it, and will make adjustments if issues are identified.

“The issue with the installation of planters has been discussed with Clondalkin Tidy Towns and we are arranging for their removal.”
