Tidy Towns group need more Tallaght Business Support

TALLAGHT Community Council (TCC) has been the driving force behind the Tallaght Village Tidy Towns group since May 2023.

In one year, the positive impact in the village is clear for all to see – less litter, less graffiti, more pride of place, more sense of place, more heritage, more greenery, more pollinators, more trees, more quality street art and a renewed focus to raise the public realm standards in the village.

The Tallaght village Tidy Towns group is getting ready to enter the national competition in May for the second time.

In the last 12 months, they have held over 150 litter picks, collecting over 1,000 bags of litter. They have hosted Tidy Towns events with eight local businesses – AWS, Colm O’Cochlainn, Fanagans, Kingsbury Furniture, Partas, MRA Accountants, Civic Facilities and Zoetis.

A hearty acknowledgment must go to Nollaig Ryan and Olivia Luc from Fanagans, who both show a clear and ongoing commitment by joining the Wednesday Lunchtime Litter picks almost weekly.

Liz Kennedy, Vice Chair of TCC, says: “Tallaght village has well over 100 businesses located in it, including retail, professional services, pubs and food outlets.

“We would like to see more businesses get actively involved this summer.

“We can support them to host a staff community giving event, or they can simply join the Wednesday Lunchtime Litter picks that take a maximum of one hour.

“Businesses can also sign our Tidy Towns pledge and show clear leadership by taking good care of the exterior of their business premises.

“I would urge every business located in Tallaght village to become an active supporter and get hands on this summer.

“Our call to arms is to every business owner located in the village to show up, show you care and take part.”

She added: “Stand with the committed volunteers and help them continue to raise the standards in our village.

“It benefits everyone, including the businesses in the village.”

So far in 2024, Tallaght Tidy Towns have focused on improving the Main Road area in Tallaght village, a key approach road to the village.

They have cleaned up the Balrothery roundabout, tackled two serious litter black spots on Main Road (one on a business premises and another behind a house), manually cleared the “forest nature trail” adjacent to Glenview, created a new flower bed at the lower Glenview entrance and installed a new authentic water pump feature here too.

The plans for the summer ahead include painting all 26 street planters, from the Old Bawn Road to Main Road in partnership with AWS.

These provide vital greenery to the village and essential food to bees and bird wildlife.

The dedicated volunteer group plans to finish the Main Road forest nature trail, to green Watergate bridge and to add more heritage features back into the village.

There will also be a social event held in May to mark Street Feast also for the volunteers and supporters.

TCC invite all interested residents and businesses to join the voluntary effort to enhance our village.

Go along to the weekly meet ups – there are jobs suitable for all abilities and ages (under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult).

The meeting point is at The Victors statue outside Café Aon Scéal, twice a week, gloves and pickers are provided, Wednesday – 12.30 to 1.30pm, and Sunday – 11am to 12 noon.
