Two arrests after cocaine worth €3.1m and cash seized

GARDAI have arrested two men following a day of action in Dublin and Wicklow that saw cocaine worth an estimated €3.1 million seized.

According to gardai, €353,000 in cash was also seized, €213k of which was discovered at a residence in Clondalkin.

The day of action on Thursday, February 1, is part of ongoing investigations into the activities of a drug trafficking network based in the DMR (Dublin Metropolitan Region) and Eastern Region.

A total of 37 dwellings, businesses and vehicles were searched throughout locations in Dublin and Wicklow.

In a statement released, An Garda Siochana said that the searches resulted in 44kg of cocaine being seized, following a search of a vehicle in Wicklow.

The drugs are estimated to be valued at €3.1m, gardai said.

A man (30s) is currently detained at a Garda station in the DMR in connection with this search. He is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.

As part of the operation, €213,000 in cash was discovered at a residence in Clondalkin.

Gardai said that €140,000 in cash was seized in further searches, with a total of €353,000 seized.

As part of Thursday’s operation, in excess of €280,000 was also frozen in bank accounts. 

Results of the searches also saw eight vehicles, estimated to be worth over €200,000, seized as evidence of money laundering / proceeds or crime.

A quantity of jewellery, including designer watches, electronic devices, laptops and smartphones were also seized.

Investigations are ongoing, garda said.

The operation was led by the Serious Crime Investigation, Drugs and Specialist Support Units of the DMR south region, with assistance from the Dublin Crime Response Team.

Assistance was also provided by personnel from the Clondalkin, Blackrock, Dun Laoghaire, Bray and Wicklow districts, the Garda Dog Unit, Customs Canine Unit and the Armed Support Unit.
