Tyrrell named in panel for World Cup Sevens
CLONDALKIN’S Hannah Tyrrell has been named in the Ireland Women’s Sevens squad for the Rugby World Cup Sevens taking place in San Francisco on July 20/21.
She along with Katie Fitzhenry and Louise Galvin will be lining out in their second World Cup this season having contested the 15s tournament in August.

The tournament features the world’s top 24 men’s and 16 women’s teams and sees the Ireland women face England in the opening Round of 16 match, with the winner progressing to the Championship Quarter-Final against either Mexico or New Zealand, while the loser will go into the last eight of the Challenge competition.
Looking forward to the challenge, IRFU Director of Sevens Rugby Anthony Eddy said “The team put in a number of good performances at the Rugby Europe Grand Prix in Marcoussis in France recently and they’ll be looking to build on that going into the first game of the World Cup Sevens on Friday week.
“We have had several close games with England this season so it is set to be a challenging way to start the tournament, but the players are very focused and know what’s needed of them to get a result,” he insisted.
Meanwhile, the Ireland Men’s squad that will also be travelling to San Francisco to contest their Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament that same weekend includes St Mary’s College player Terry Kennedy.
A very valuable addition to the side, Kennedy has scored 16 tries over two Rugby Europe Grand Prix events.
The opening round of the men’s event is an initial knock-out qualifier featuring the countries ranked ninth to 24th, while the top eight seeds progress automatically to the round of 16.
Ireland were ranked 16th and will face Chile in their opening fixture, with the winners continuing on to face World Series Champions South Africa in the last 16, while the losers will move into the Bowl Quarter-Finals.
“It has been nine years since there’s been an Irish Men’s team at the Rugby World Cup Sevens, and the players are really excited for the challenge that lies ahead and are keen to demonstrate the progress they have made over the last number of seasons,” said Eddy.
