Village will be destroyed if development goes ahead
By Brendan Grehan
THE PROPOSED redevelopment of the former Vincent Byrne site in Palmerstown village will “destroy” the village if it goes ahead as planned, a local councillor has claimed, reports Brendan Grehan.
Councillor Guss O’Connell was speaking after attending an information meeting on the development hosted by the developers, McGrath Group Properties at the Clarion Hotel in Liffey Valley.
Plans consist of 305 apartments at the former Vincent Byrne site
Cllr O’Connell said: “The village of Palmerstown will be destroyed if this goes ahead. It is just far too big for the village. Under the proposals, there will be two eight-storey towers with a six-storey block between them.”
As proposed the development will consist of 305 apartments in a mix of 3/5/6/8 storey blocks. The apartments will be a mix of one, two and three-bedroom units.
There will be one entrance and exit. Parking will comprise of 200 underground spaces which will turn left into the village when exiting the development and then use a mini-roundabout at the t-junction in front of the Palmerstown House to come down to the existing junction at the Kennelsfort Road.
There was a good turn out at the information meeting and Cllr O’Connell claims that the overall response was negative to the proposals.
He said: “People were absolutely shocked at the size of the development. Two eight-storey towers with a six-storey tower between them. They are far too high for the area. Then there is the amount of cars. As it stands it can take up to 20 minutes to get out of the village. As I said before this will destroy the village if it goes ahead.”
On local social media pages, the comments were overwhelmingly negative towards the development.
The Echo contacted McGrath Group Properties for a comment but they did not respond before we went to press.
