Volunteers give a dig-out in the Fettercairn community garden
By Alannah Kenny
THE FETTERCAIRN community garden underwent a six-hour facelift on recently with volunteers from Unilever and Foróige teaming up to give their assistance.
Food solution organis-ation, Unilever Ireland, arranged for some of their staff, headed by Colm Dowling, to help tidy up the overgrown plots and transform it into a flower garden, including vegetable plots for the use of the community also.
According to the manager of the Fettercairn Community Centre, Shay L’estrange, work was carried out between 10am and 4pm during which time changes were made to help improve the garden aesthetically and allow accessibility.
L’estrange said that paths needed to be re-laid to help give the community “ease of access to the garden”, inclusive of those with mobility difficulties.
He added that the seating area in the garden was given a makeover to provide a space for people to quietly reflect or catch up with others.
The back of the garden has been transformed into a memorial area to be “dedicated to the people of Fettercairn who passed away.”
Unilever staff also painted the hall, kitchen and youth area in the community centre and Mr L’estrange thanked them on the completion of the project, stating that their work had “exceeded everyone’s expectations.”
He gave a special thanks to the youth organisation, Foróige, which was responsible for advocating a makeover for the community garden, and also mentioned the staff of the Community and Youth Centre who got “stuck in” on the day.
Mr L’estrange encouraged everyone in the Fettercairn community to come and enjoy the garden and see the improvement for themselves.
