Wanderers battle back to topple Towers
A SUPERB second half recovery by Wanderers was enough to clinch them a 3-6 to 1-10 victory over Round Towers of Lusk and, with it, the Junior F Ladies Football title in St Margaret’s GAA Club on Friday.
Down by eight points at the half-time break, Wanderers served up three second-half goals and choked off much of the Towers attack to rocket themselves right back into contention.

It was Wanderers who drew first blood by way of a point from Caroline Conway before, at the other end, goalkeeper Kyra O’Sullivan pulled off a fine save from Sophie O’Hara’s penalty.
Even at that, their narrow lead did not stay intact much longer as O’Hara converted a free soon after and Jessica Grimes also struck over.
Maria Redmond did tag on another for Wanderers, but Towers soon began to turn the screw with points from O’Hara, Grimes and Evanna Niall and a goal from substitute Niamh Howley putting them in a commanding position.
It left Wanderers with a mountain to climb at the break, but they set about scaling it despite Towers enlarging their advantage early in the second half when Grace Codd broke up-field and fired over a point.
Combining with Mary Gaynor to prise open the Towers cover, Danelle Valentine found the back of the net to signal the start of the Wanderers comeback.
A second goal was not long in coming with Anne Whelan finishing off a sublime team attack that also involved Conway, Kellie Gaynor, Aleisha Fitzgerald and Mary Gaynor.
Points from Conway and Emma Murphy left the bare minimum between the sides, although Meghan Kiely made it a two-point match for Towers.
Yet Wanderers hit the front for the first time in the match when Emma Murphy’s free dipped under the bar before Mary Gaynor’s point in the closing minute copperfastened their lead.
