Wanted: spectacles of all shapes, sizes and condition . . .

Wanted: spectacles of all shapes, sizes and condition . . .

LUCAN Lions Club is encouraging people to donate unwanted spectacles to several local shops, which are then recycled to third world countries.

All varieties, condition and sizes are welcome – adults, children’s, sunglasses, damaged/broken – the club can use them all. No need to include glasses cases, as these are not required.

Once collected, the spectacles are boxed and dispatched via DPD sponsorship to Medico Lions Clubs de France in Le Havre.

On arrival, the spectacles are sorted and cleaned. Using specialised equipment, the power of the lenses is measured for the new owner.

Each delivery relies on the international network of Lions Clubs, and their partners.

Imperfect glasses are dismantled, and the component parts are sold to reputable and trusted companies with money raised, helping to fund the operation.

How to donate?

Anyone interested in donating glasses can email spectacles@lionsclubs.ie stating their name and location.

Lucan Lions Club has already shipped over 3,700 glasses for re-cycling in 2023.

Some local Lions collection bins are available at Mullins & Henry Opticians in SuperValu Shopping Centre (SC), Lucan, Boylans Opticians, Ballyfermot Road, Vision Express, The Square SC, and Specsavers stores in Liffey Valley SC, Clondalkin SC, the Square Tallaght, and City West SC.

Meanwhile, Lucan Lions Club is hosting a fundraiser on Friday, October 13, at Lucan Sarsfields (8pm).

The quiz night will feature prizes and it is €40 for a team of four.

Entries can be made on the night.
