A COUNCILLOR has said he is “furious” about delays to the development of a playground in Waterstown in Palmerstown, which was due to be completed next month but is now expected to be completed by the end of November, reports Aideen O’Flaherty.

Plans for the playground development have been delayed, however, South Dublin County Council has now appointed a contractor, and confirmed that all of the equipment for the playground has been ordered and is currently in the process of being manufactured.

Danny O’Brien, Sinn Féin councillor for Lucan, told The Echo: “There’s never been a playground in Palmerstown and it’s a big issue.

“I get emails all the time and people ringing me about this.

“People, and especially those with young kids, need a playground.

“There’s a couple of play spaces in the area, but no playground.”

The playground development was one of the winning projects in the council’s ‘€300k Have Your Say’ initiative, which allowed members of the community to decide how the council spent a portion of their public budget in their area.

The tender process for the playground was delayed until last May, and is now on course for contractors to start working on the site in mid-October, and for the playground to be complete by the end of November.

Cllr O’Brien added: “We’re all talking about trying get children off Playstations and computers to go outside to play – I’m furious [about the delay].”

A spokesperson for South Dublin County Council told The Echo: “The tender process for the playground has been completed successfully and a contractor has been appointed.

“At this stage all equipment has been ordered and is currently being manufactured; some items being quite large scale.

“The contractors programmed start date, given the necessary lead in period, is October 15, 2018.

“The playground was the largest capital project chosen within the public participatory budget and given the scale of necessary consultation, design, tendering and proposed construction the above time line is considered to be in line with similar construction projects.”
