‘We need kids to cop on at an early age’ says Paddy

TWO young men from Jobstown put out a fire after a moped was set alight in Dromcarra on Monday evening, with Sinn Féin councillor Paddy Holohan praising the young men’s actions and calling for the community “to come together”.
Cllr Holohan posted videos to social media platform Instagram on Monday showing the moped shortly after it had been set alight, and then the actions of two young men who carried pots and pans of water to douse the blaze, and later cleaned up the debris from the path.

Cllr Holohan told The Echo: “I can never understand why people [set things on fire], it wouldn’t have made sense to me to do something like this, even when I was a kid.
“My mother has to walk up that road, when I saw the moped on fire I was thinking, ‘What are we going to do when the bike melts all over the path?’
“We have a situation where the community needs to come together, parents need to start grounding their kids and keeping an eye on them.
“We need to get the kids to cop on at an earlier age, this community is already deprived in funding and garda resources, we can’t be chopping away at things like this.”
Commenting on the two young men who took it upon themselves to extinguish the fire and clean up the remaining detritus, Cllr Holohan said they’re “great lads, they turned something bad into something good”.

The Echo contacted Dublin Fire Brigade for a comment in relation to such incidents. District Officer Peter Navan said: “If people see a fire like that they should always ring emergency services as it can be very dangerous for a person to get too close to a vehicle that is on fire.”
