Wellbeing with Lee Moroney: Summer Time Hints and Tips

From Tallaght, Lee Moroney has been coaching adults, teens and children for over 20 years, specialising in tutoring for DDLETB in sports, exercise and fitness QQI level 5s, along with many community education courses around wellbeing.

We are now approaching mid June – the evenings are still bright till 10pm and you can still pound the pavements or even drive out a bit for a sea-side stroll.

The start of the year in terms of consistency for me was very poor, being ill at the start of the year with a flu/sore throat that took a while to shift with my own running/Fitness regime returning in late April after Easter.

When the Summer begins our routines go out the window, the gusto we had at the start of the year is long gone and all those ‘New Year, New Me’ promises have evaporated.

Sometimes with the the heat and extra sunshine we can feel even more exhausted and tired which can have an effect on our daily routine and energy levels.

My top tips for having a productive summer

  1. Make home made smoothies they contain less sugar – some store bought ones contain extra sugar for sweetness and to preserve.

Lee’s Banana Shake

  • 1 Large Banana – Peeled and cut into 6/8 pieces
  • Cup full of Milk (340-400 mls)
  • 2 large Dollops of Natural Yogurt
  • Optional- 100 mls of orange juice
  • Put in to smoothie maker or blender and blitz and serve
  1. Get your veggies in – cold crispy salads are easily prepared and can add to your Summer BBQ or even as a main meal or lunch.

Summer Chicken Salad with home made chips/wedges (serves two)

2 Chicken fillets cooked and allowed cool (seasoned with some salt, black pepper and some mixed herbs)

4 tbsp of Mayonnaise (low fat or normal up to you)

Hand full of lettuce – 2 Grated Carrot (add more vegetables if desired)

Chop up the chicken into strips and put lettuce into a bowl, add in grated carrots and stir in your mayonnaise one spoon at a time into the mix and eat with hot home made chips or wedges.

  1. Do Something New – a new walking trail, have a picnic outdoors, we have the beautiful Dublin mountains not too far from us or even go cross County lines into Wicklow – there are lovely walks and trails around which can be easy to moderate and can help get the families outdoors and active.
  1. Try and Keep up regular exercise, hydrated well throughout the day and if sitting in a beer garden on a sunny afternoon try sip some water between drinks.
  1. Finally look after yourself and those who are most precious to you. We often think in the Summer that nobody has a care in the world, but people often find this a hard time of year – because of the lack of routine, compared to September to June, there can be gaps of time in people’s schedules and lives. Check in on your mates on a regular basis, go for that walk, meet for a coffee or even a sneaky tea time beer!
