Weston end 60-year wait for Intermediate Cup
WESTON Hockey Club’s mens seconds team bridged a 60-year gap since they last raised the Leinster Intermediate Club after they beat Mullingar 2-0 in Grange Road on Saturday.
The Lucan side edged a goal in front by the halftime break when David Shiels tucked away a short corner.
And Darren Sherlock, who had only just been introduced, fired home the second after he latched on to a neat delivery from Shane O’Hare.
It was an extra special occasion for O’Hare, the vice captain of this team, as he helped lift the provincial prize his father, Brendan, had won with Weston all those years ago.
The feat had seen Weston surmount the challenge of Trinity, St Brendan’s and Navan en route to the decider.
And in the final, they were up against a Mullingar outfit that had lost only once on their way to the Division Four title- that defeat again coming at the hands of Weston who finished third and can look forward to playing Division Three hockey themselves next season.
