A past pupil of Coláiste Bríde, Rachel is an experienced live performer who has gigged at the Grand Social, the Clondalkin Festival and the Busker Fleadh.
While Rachel writes and records her own music, which is influenced by Passenger and Alanis Morrissette, she jumped at the chance to record Keith McLoughlin and Gillian Tuite’s affecting composition.
‘Without You’ is a poignant song that grapples with the loss of a loved one, and trying to deal with life while processing the loss.
Now a final year music student in Maynooth University, Rachel told The Echo about how she feels about the release of ‘Without You’ in March, what the recording process was like, and where she finds inspiration for her own songs.
You’re an experienced live performer, but when did you first perform on stage and what was that like?
I first performed on stage when I was 10 years old at various singing competitions, and it was quite daunting at first. It was something I had never done before, but in the long run it definitely helped me gain a lot of confidence.
How do you feel about releasing your debut single ‘Without You’?
I’m really excited to release ‘Without You’ next month, and I was so delighted to be asked by Keith to sing on it.
The whole song was written and finalized over various video calls between the three of us due to the current Covid-19 social distancing restrictions, so it was definitely a different way to write a song.
But it was also an interesting lockdown project, and it was so nice to still be able to take part in something music-related as live performances aren’t possible right now.
The song was written by Keith McLoughlin and Gillian Tuite, what was your response when you saw the lyrics and heard the melody for it?
When Keith first sent me the song it was only an idea, so it was amazing to see the song take shape and unfold over the various video calls I sat in on.
The song is very emotional in my opinion and I hope that listeners can relate to its message.
What was it like to record ‘Without You’ at Beardfire Music Production Studio?
It was such a lovely experience recording with Rohan and Al from Beardfire Music Production Studio.
They were just as passionate and enthusiastic about the song as we were, and it made the recording process run smoothly. It ended up being a lot of fun!
You also write your own songs. How would you describe them and where do you get your inspiration from?
Yes, I do write my own songs! I would say they are within the genre of pop, acoustic and indie.
I mainly get my inspiration from my own life experiences. For me, it is a way of getting my feelings out on a page and expressing myself.
‘Without You’ will be available on all streaming platforms on March 5.
