Woman leaving bingo session had handbag snatched by thug

A PENSIONER mugged on the way from bingo, was relieved to have her belongings returned after gardai tracked a lone male to a nearby park and discovered him in possession of a ladies handbag.

The incident occurred on Monday, September 5, on Decies Road, Ballyfermot, at approximately 10.15pm.

Decies County 14 Sept

The woman, who was attending a weekly senior citizens bingo session at the County Bar on Decies Road, had her handbag snatched by a thug on the footpath.

Gardai followed up the call, and tracked a man to nearby Markiewicz Park, where he was found to be in possession of the woman’s handbag.

The man was subsequently charged with theft, and appeared in court the following day.

The Echo was unable to access the court verdict of the man at the time of going to print last Wednesday evening.

A local source said the woman was not thought to have suffered serious injuries during the incident.

“Fair play to the gardai, you don’t normally hear about the good things they do, but to respond quickly like that, and get the woman’s handbag back, with her belongings and all, is great stuff,” said the man.

A Garda spokesperson said: “A man was charged with the bag snatch incident on Decies Road. He was found in possession of a handbag in a nearby park.”
