Wonderful memories are shared at Heritage Week

By Maurice Garvey

VISITORS to Ballyfermot Library recently stepped back in time to enjoy old video and photographic footage of the area during a Heritage Week event.

Hosted by Ballyfermot Heritage group, the event delivered nice memories on years gone by for visitors who attended.

Tallaght resident Ken Larkin, who is originally from Ballyfermot but moved to St Mark’s, established the Ballyfermot and St Mark’s Heritage Photos site in 2007.

He also creates videos on the site, and is involved with a local heritage group, who meet up every second Thursday in Ballyfermot Library to share memories.

Ken said: “Thank you to all my friends in the Ballyfermot Heritage Group for their help in putting together a great day, and thank you to Colin Desmond O’ Halloran for coming along to share his memories of Ballyfermot from the beginning of the Ballyfermot housing estate in 1948.

“Last but not least, the many people that attended to share their wonderful memories. Thanks to Sean Brennan who is compiling a video of the day.”

Ken has uploaded a folder of the Heritage Day on his Flickr site Ballyfermot and St Mark’s Heritage Photos.

The site was set up in 2007 but has already surpassed a remarkable 10 million website views.

However, Ken says it wouldn’t be what it is, without the help of people who send in pictures.
