Work starts on Amazon’s fourth data centre in Tallaght

WORK has commenced on the construction of a new Amazon data centre at the site of the former Barretts warehouse in Tallaght.
Last March, Amazon secured planning permission for the two-storey data centre, which will be an annex to the online giant’s neighbouring data centre in the Greenhills Business Park on the Greenhills Road.
The planning application was lodged by ADSIL (Amazon Data Services Ireland Limited) late last year, with plans for the proposed building to be accessed through the neighbouring data centre to the north, via the existing site entrance that serves the neighbouring data centre.
The internet giant already has a strong presence in the area, with three other data centres, located at a former Tesco distribution centre, the former Shinko Microelectronics site and the former Jacob’s biscuit factory, already in operation in the area.
Amazon recently secured planning permission for the development of a second data centre on the Jacob’s site, which attracted an objection from Irish Life PLC, who own land near the development and were concerned about the potential for noise issues, but the objection was ultimately withdrawn this month.
Once the development of the data centres on the former Barretts site and the former Jacob’s site is complete, Amazon will have a total of five data centres in the Tallaght region.
Amazon’s data centre foothold in the area began in 2011, with the purchase of Tesco’s vacated distribution warehouse off the Greenhills Road, however, the company first started investing in South Dublin County in 2007.
The cumulative impact of their economic activity in the region on the Irish economy is in excess of €1.25 billion.
