World record set by Dodder Valley Cycling volunteers
DODDER Valley Cycling volunteers marked the Summer Solstice in a special way last week by setting a world record.
Sonas, the Cycling Without Age Trishaw, which is normally reserved for those with mobility or other issues, was open to anyone who wished to experience the park in a different way from the comfort of a seat on a slow cycle.
In addition to making the experience available to everyone, the team opened the booking calendar from 5.45am to 10pm to ensure the greatest possible availability.
“This idea came from a WhatsApp conversation from one of the volunteers,” said Alan O’Flaherty, founder of the Cycling Without Age chapter in the park.
“We started talking about the possibility of offering sunrise cycles, and speculating about who would be mad enough to get up at that hour.
“As is often the case, one idea led to another, and Sonas Solstice was born”.
Making the Trishaw available for such a long period of time in one day meant that setting a Cycling Without Age world record was on the cards.
As the sun rose on Midsummer’s Day, the challenge began with the first online booking at 6.45am.
Although the person who booked didn’t show up, an early walker in the park gamely hopped on board to help with the world record attempt.
Luckily, the weather held out and the torrential rain of the previous day didn’t repeat itself.
Sonas retired for the night just after 11pm, and the counting of numbers began with as much intensity as a tallyman eyeing up the votes in a recount for the final seat in the Dáil!
The team did an extraordinary job, creating a new world record for the greatest number of passengers carried in a Trishaw in one day, and longest hours of operation in one day.
41 people got to take a trip along the Dodder, over the 15 hours of operation, and over 70 km cycled.
Staff from South Dublin County Sports Partnership and South Dublin County Council came out to support the team as well, and speaking about the event, Thomas McDermott of SDCSP said: “This incredible feat showcases their dedication to promoting age-friendly inclusive transportation and making a positive impact on our community.
“Their team’s hard work, passion, and commitment have paid off, and we couldn’t be prouder!”.
The volunteers hope that having experienced the Trishaw, people will tell a friend or family member who might be a bit nervous about trying something new.
“We want the wheels rolling in the park as much as possible, and reaching more people,” said Alan.
“If this new record results in more bookings, then that’s the icing on the cake.”
