Year In Review 2017 – December
THE DAYS got shorter and the Christmas lights started to come out. People started to think of the year ahead and the year they have just had.
Though the festivities are just warming up, there is plenty of new stories in December to remind us that the news never goes on holiday.
This month, Clondalkin detective, David Brennan, received a Scott medal for bravery. David was drinking in Jacobs Bar in Saggart with his father in July 2013 when a resident came in to report a robbery taking place in the bookies.
They both went to the scene where David felled one of the robbers with a kung-fu kick.
Early in the month we reported on the heartbreaking inquest of 11-year-old Milly Tuomey from Templeogue who took her own life in January 2016.
We reported that Milly’s mother has set up a suicide support group to prevent and further loss of life in the area.
We also reported from the inquest of Paul Gorman. Paul (35) from Woodford Meadows, Clondalkin, lost control of his car on the Naas Road and crashed.
The inquest heard that he was not wearing a seat belt.
There was more tragedy in Tallaght when I6-year-old soccer player Exause (Izzy) Dezu collapsed and died during a game in North Dublin.
President Michael D Higgins and FAI Chief Executive John Delaney both paid tribute to the young soccer player.
Over in Lucan, there was a good news story when FAI Chief Executive John Delaney visited Esker Celtic FC to turn the sod on their new frame football pitch.
We also talked to Jason Lester (18) from Brookview Close, Tallaght.
Jason was found guilty of the false imprisonment of former Tánaiste Joan Burton during the Jobstown protest.
Jason had his conviction overturned on appeal this month and described his “feeling of relief” at the conclusion of his appeal.
The community has made one Tallaght family’s Christmas wish come true by uniting over the past 12 months to raise €100,000 – which will give the Tighe family, especially 10-year-old Daniel, a “brighter future”.
The deal to buy the Cuckoo’s Nest has been sealed, with the new owners moving in this week and securing the site ahead of development in early 2018 – which could result in the landmark pub being completely levelled.
A Cheque for over €16,000 was handed over to ‘A Princess Named Emily’ campaign, last week by the Ciarán Carr Foundation after a successful 5k Family Fun Run was held in Corkagh Park last October.
Jobstown Boxing Club is starting the New Year on a solid stance after the community put its weight behind the club following a fire at the premises last month.
