Young Dancer Shines: Chloe placed highly in online dancing competitions

A young dancer from Bancroft in Tallaght, who had only been dancing for less than a year when the pandemic started, has placed highly in numerous online dance competitions in recent months.

Chloe Humphreys, seven, started training in ballroom and Latin American dance in the AD Dance School, which is run by her aunty Anita Dunne, in August 2019 and quickly developed a passion for dancing.

Dancing has also allowed Chloe, who attends St Mary’s National School in Tallaght, to come out of her shell, as when she started attending the dance school, she was shy, but has gone on to compete in and place highly in numerous dance competitions.

Chloe’s mam, Lisa McGovern, told The Echo: “She loves dancing now, but she wasn’t very confident at the beginning.

“When we’d see her at the competitions at the start, she’d dip her head down, but now her confidence is oozing.”

Just over two months after she started dancing, Chloe entered her first competition, the IADT Dance Championship in Perrystown, and she performed two waltzes and one cha-cha – and placed second in all of her dances.

Lisa added: “She also danced the adult and child dance with her nanny, Frances McGovern, and they came first!”

Chloe then competed in six more competitions, where she placed third, second and first in several of the events, before the lockdown came into effect in March 2020.

Buoyed by her success, Chloe wanted to start competing in online dance competitions when in-person competitions were no longer allowed, and she continued to wow the judges with her performances.

Lisa said: “Chloe has competed in six online competitions so far and is absolutely flying.

“In her first online Dublin competition, she came first place in her three events in the Under-8 category.

“The other five online competitions were British championships.

“In these events she was against numerous other children from all over the world, and she has made the final six in all these competitions. This is a massive achievement from a small girl in a small country!”

Chloe’s favourite dance is the cha-cha because of how upbeat it is, and she’s looking forward to competing in more dance competitions in the future.

“She says to everyone that she’s going to be famous and she wants to be a dancer when she grows up,” said Lisa.

“Chloe loves dancing and has made friends for life in her dance school. We are very proud of how far Chloe has come in such a short time!”
