Young people take part in summer programme
By Mary Dennehy
YOUNG people in MacUilliam enjoyed a week-long, estate-based summer programme, which took in sport workshops, nature walks and a trip to the National Museum of Ireland.
A group of 16 young people took part in the Breakaway programme, which was delivered by Foroige’s Brookfield Community Youth Project and the Dublin and Dun Laoghaire ETB.

The Breakaway programme was the first time an estate-based project has been run during the summer by Foroige and the ETB.
Speaking with The Echo, Foroige Youth Officer Darren McGovern said: “The nearest project for young people living in MacUilliam is in the Brookfield Youth and Community Centre, which is a long enough walk.
“We decided to bring the project to the young people, and 16 young people took part and learned new skills and team work in a pro-social atmosphere.”
Some of the activities included rugby and football workshops on the MacUilliam green alongside trips to Avon Ri in Blessington for a nature walk and a Luas challenge, incorporating stops at Heuston Station, the National Museum of Ireland and Aqua Zone.

“The thinking behind bringing the programme to the estate was to support young people in working together and to get to know each other”, Darren said.
“It really was a positive story for the area.”
Foroige are currently working on the ground in MacUilliam, where they deliver a weekly football programme with the ETB.
