Young project managers take part in PM Skills for Life Camp
TRANSITION Year students from two local schools were represented as part of only 24 students nominated to take part in a PM Skills for Life Innovation Camp in SAP recently.
The Innovation Camp celebrated young project managers from Dublin who have excelled during the completion of the PM Skills for Life programme, a collaborative initiative between the Project Management Institute Educational Foundation (PMIEF) and Junior Achievement Ireland (JAI).
During the Innovation Camp students from Assumption Secondary School Walkinstown and Drimnagh Castle Secondary School enjoyed a masterclass with Project Managers Eimear Brennan and Michelle Barry from SAP, who spoke about the importance of project management in the modern workforce, and they also completed an advanced project management workshop and shared their key learnings as project managers.
A tour of SAP offices completed an exciting day for the young project managers as well as their teachers.
The PM Skills for Life programme enabled students to understand, plan, carry out, monitor and evaluate a project of their own with the support of a project management professional.
Participating students also completed PMIEF’s student badging programme, in which they sat an examination to assess their project management knowledge acquisition and retention.
On successful completion they received a digital badge certifying their achievement and verifying their project management proficiency.
As part of their programme students from Assumption Secondary School Walkinstown raised money through a fundraiser Music Festival event they organised in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital with the guidance of business volunteer Eimear Brennan from SAP.
Meanwhile participating students in Drimnagh Castle Secondary School organised a 1st Year Soccer Tournament event also in aid Crumlin Children’s Hospital. Michelle Barry from SAP assisted these students.
Both events were organised from conception to completion by the students as they put into practise the project management skills they learned through the PM Skills for Life programme.
Niamh Dwyer, teacher in Assumption Secondary School Walkinstown, said: “The students have learned new and valuable skills around project management as they were challenged to plan and run their own class project.
“I would like to thank Eimear Brennan from SAP for taking the time to work with us and really bringing project management to life. I would also like to thank SAP for hosting the Innovation Camp which really underlined the importance and relevance of project management in their company.”
Jeannette L. Barr, PMIEF Executive Director, said: “In the 21st century, the demand for skilled project managers is at an all-time high as organisations continue to focus on higher productivity and greater customer satisfaction with minimum resources.
“The PMI Educational Foundation is delighted to have joined with Junior Achievement Ireland to educate students on the importance of project management as a skill set they will need for college, career, and lifelong success.”
