Mac Uilliam estate to get CCTV cameras installed to tackle issues

THE installation of CCTV at the intersections of Mac Uilliam Walk and Grove, and Mac Uilliam Way and Avenue, is ‘badly needed’ to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area, according to a local TD, reports Aideen O’Flaherty.

The two new CCTV camera locations were proposed by South Dublin County Council at a meeting of the South Dublin County Joint Policing Committee (JPC) on Friday, after they were requested by the Mac Uilliam Residents’ Association.

Speaking at the meeting, Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe said: “I think it’s badly needed…I’m very supportive of the roll out of this.”

The council stated that the cameras will cover areas where there have been reports of estate management issues.

Footage from the CCTV cameras will be stored on a secure video management system operated by the council and will “not be shared with third parties” unless there is a lawful requirement to do so.

When the topic was discussed at the JPC meeting, the council’s director of housing, social and community development, Colm Ward, said the council had liaised with relevant stakeholders about it.

“There’s been liaison with Approved Housing Bodies who have homes in the area, and ongoing engagement with the residents’ association,” said Mr Ward.

“It’s felt that installing CCTV with appropriate signage will help to address some of the estate management issues.”

The proposed signage to accompany the cameras denotes that the cameras are being operated by the council, and will record continuously on a 24-hour basis for the purposes of “crime prevention, safety and security”.
