Jamie picks up gold for hard work in engineering project

A STUDENT from St Mac Dara’s Community School has received recognition for his hard work in the Leaving Cert after being awarded a gold medal from the Department of Education for his engineering project.
Jamie McCarthy, from Kingswood, was chosen out of all students across the county and is now set to go on to represent Dublin in the National Engineering Final in Clonmel, County Tipperary.
Jamie’s project was submitted by his engineering teacher Mr McCabe, and when Jamie was announced as the winner he was unaware of being entered into the competition.
Jamie’s father Fergus told The Echo: “We were absolutely delighted and Jamie was absolutely delighted with the win.
“He was the first in his class to finish his project and the only one to make a template for it. He got great support from the school particularly from Mrs Alsop.”
Jamie is now working with the Summit Conservation, specialising in the structural conservation and restoration of Heritage Buildings.
Brian Cunningham, contracts manager with Summit Conservation, spoke to The Echo about Jamie’s work with the company.
He said: “Jamie has mentioned the medal in passing, but he didn’t really make a big deal out of it.
“Jamie is a quick learner, he’s very keen to learn on the job and he’s not afraid of hard work at all, fair play to him on the success.”
