Active South Dublin April Sports Star: Adam Olaniyan
THERE was plenty to shout about for Jobstown Boxing Club at the European Youth Championships in Croatia last month.
Super-heavyweight Adam Olaniyan came out tops against Misak Tepanyan from Armenia in the 92 plus kilos to create history for his club to become the only boxer to win two European gold medals.
On his way to the final, Adam overcame boxers from Poland, Turkey and Ukraine before beating Tepanyan in the final.
In the build up to the Championships, Adam did a 14-week training camp, 11 weeks in Ireland, one week in France and two weeks in Croatia.
“It was a great experience, European gold, at Super-heavyweight, not many people my age have done this, so it’s just a great experience all round to have achieved this,” Adam told The Echo.
“This is my second time to win a gold medal so hopefully we will win a few more in the future.
“I am now looking forward to the Worlds in Croatia so hopefully we can get a gold medal there.
“The coaches in Jobstown Boxing Club do a lot for me outside the ring and that everything is good so it’s great for all of them also”.
The Active South Dublin Sports Awards are run in association with The Echo, and supported by South Dublin County Council and The Plaza Hotel, Tallaght.
