Newtown Rangers secure promotion from Major One
NEWTOWN Rangers have officially clinched promotion from Major Sunday 1 Football, marking a significant milestone in their remarkable resurgence.
Sitting eight points clear at the top of the table, they now eagerly await Mount Merrion’s upcoming matches, hoping their rivals falter, to not only secure promotion but also claim the league title, reports Rory Merriman.
This achievement is particularly poignant given Newtown’s turbulent history over the past few years.
Just three years ago, the club found itself teetering on the brink of relegation.
In the 2021/22 season, they narrowly escaped the drop, a close call that foreshadowed the tumultuous times ahead.
The following season, 2022/23, proved to be a nightmare. Despite their valiant efforts, Newtown Rangers opted out of the intermediate division in Major Sunday, only to endure a disastrous campaign that saw them relegated to Major 1 Sunday.
This demotion was a harsh blow to the club, sparking fears of a prolonged struggle to regain their former standing.
However, the arrival of new managers Owen Hamilton and Graham McInerney in the current season has been a turning point.
Their leadership has been instrumental in transforming the team’s fortunes.
Hamilton and Davies implemented a rigorous regime focusing on training, tactics, and discipline, which quickly began to yield results.
The current squad is youthful and dynamic, with most players aged between 21 and 23, complemented by the experience of two veterans in their early 30s.
This blend of youthful exuberance and seasoned wisdom has proven to be a winning formula.
Newtown Rangers’ recent form has been nothing short of spectacular. They have won their last five games, a streak that has propelled them to the top of the league and secured their promotion.
This run of victories is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players and the strategic acumen of the management duo.
“We started the season off really well, but we took a dip in form about midway through the season,” assistant coach Graham Mc Inerney told The Echo.
“At the start of the season, our goal was to secure a promotion.
“Winning the league would really be the icing on the cake.
“The lads to be fair to them have done excellent to adapt to the new ways myself and Owen have implemented.
“We came in here with high standards set and tactical training sessions that are applicable to match situations and the lads have done excellent,” Mc Inerney added.
“We’ve won our last five games and now we have secured promotion.
“We’re just hoping that Mount Merrion mess up now.”
