Adamstown community sports hall gets go-ahead

PLANNING permission has been granted by South Dublin County Council to Castlethorn Construction to build a sports and community hall at Adamstown.
Earlier this year, an agreement took place between stakeholders regarding the future of the long-awaited sports hall in Adamstown.
Residents have been prominent in ensuring a community hall is built in the area.
A community hall was included in plans for the Adamstown SDZ but fell through when the recession kicked in.
Adamstown Community College, which opened in 2009 and has over 900 students, never received the promised sports hall.
Meetings have taken place over the year between the developer, the council, and the Department of Education, with a view to submitting a revised planning application for the provision of a shared school and community facility.
Castlethorn Construction has been granted permission to construct a community centre with sports hall, (gross floor area of c.1,381 sq m) in a part single/part two-storey over-ground building.
The building will contain four multi-purpose community meeting rooms with associated kitchenette, toilets and storage areas; a single-storey double-height sports hall of c.33×18 metres, with associated storage areas; a fitness suite of c.121 sq m with associated storage areas; two changing areas; two entrance lobbies and a reception, together with other ancillary accommodation; ancillary site development and landscape works.
Eight new cycle parking stands (parking for 16 bicycles) are also proposed to serve the development.
Access to the building will be provided from the south (Station Road), and also from the north.
The proposed development includes the relocation of 24 cycle parking stands (parking for 168 bicycles) within Adamstown Community College; all on site of c.0.267 ha.
Bounded by Adamstown Park to the west, Station Road to the south and Adamstown Community College to the north and east.
Local councillor William Lavelle welcomed the news.
He told The Echo: “This is very good news. Well done to all Adamstown residents as well as all students, parents and staff of Adamstown Community College who campaigned for provision of this important facility.
“I was delighted to assist them,” he added.
