Aim of new group is to help carers look after themselves

A NEW support group for carers was launched in the Fettercairn Community Centre on Monday morning, and the group will meet once a month.

The development of the group has been driven by the HSE’s Primary Care Social Work Department in collaboration with the Fettercairn Health Project.

The launch featured a question-and-answer session and the strong attendance on the day confirmed the demand for a support group of this nature.

Samantha Griffin from the Fettercairn Health Project, who has spearheaded the development of the group, told The Echo about the need for the new group.

“It was evident from the morning that there is a huge demand for a group like this in the community,” she said.

“Often carers can become invisible and isolated when caring for a loved one.

“This peer support group helps to reduce isolation by building connections or friendships with other carers.

“It facilitates learning and support through shared stories, experience and knowledge.

“It was expressed by a group member that it feels like a safe space where you can come and feel understood.”

The aim of the group is to help carers to look after themselves, and to curb the isolation they can feel due to the demands placed on their physical and mental wellbeing while caring for a loved one.

The monthly carer support group takes place on the first Thursday of every month from 10.30am to 12.30pm in the Fettercairn Community Centre.
