Doherty, from Cherry Orchard in Ballyfermot, was assaulted on Friday night, December 28, in Ballyowen Lane, Lucan.

He was found on the street and rushed to hospital with serious head injuries.

It is the second time this year that Doherty has suffered a serious head injury.

After a car crash in June doctors had to remove some of his skull due to swelling on the brain.

He was in a coma for a number of weeks before being released from hospital and undergoing extensive rehabilitation.

A Garda spokesperson told The Echo: “Gardai in Lucan are investigating a serious assault which occurred at Ballyowen Lane, Lucan on Friday the 28th December 2018.

“A 20-year-old male is being treated in Beaumont hospital for serious head injuries following the incident. An Incident Room has been established at Lucan Garda Station to investigate the incident.”

The spokesperson added: “A number of witnesses have come forward and Gardai are now following a definite line of enquiry. The injured man is understood to be in a critical but stable condition at Beaumont Hospital.

“No arrests have been made to date and enquiries are ongoing.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at Lucan Garda Station 01-6667300 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.”
