Established in 1986, the barbers received €1,000 under the council’s annual Shop Front Grant Scheme – in addition to a grant received to part fund the installation of an improved shop front design.

South Dublin County Mayor Sarah Holland said: “I congratulate John on the design of the new shop front. How a shop front looks matters to both the business owner and the local community. The council’s Shop Front Grant Scheme aims to improve the appearance of independently owned shops fronting public streets.”

John O’Loughlin, proprietor of Tallaght Traditional Barber Shop, said: “I’m delighted with this award. I’ve had so many positive messages from customers about the new shop front design.

“I’ve been serving customers in Tallaght village since 1986 and with my son coming on board, there will be a second generation to serve Tallaght. It’s great that the council gives businesses the opportunity to apply for this grant and I would encourage other small business owners in the area to consider applying for the scheme.”

Under the 2015 Shop Front Grant Scheme, John arranged for the existing fascia sign and external roller shutters to be removed.

A new shop front and window graphics were designed by Sean Sheehan from signs365.ie, and O’Meara Aspect Design installed the new timber shop front complete with raised lettering and new lighting.

Grants are available for up to €8,500 to a maximum of 50% of overall costs. Furthermore, €1,000 is awarded for the Best Designed Shop Front under the scheme.

Details of the scheme for 2016 will be available on the council’s website at www.sdcc.ie and on social media accounts within the next few weeks.
