Calls for council to reconsider Swiftbrook Paper Mill plans

THERE are calls for South Dublin County Council to reconsider the rejection of the idea to turn Swiftbrook Paper Mill into a tourist location.

Local representative Chris O’Dwyer for Clondalkin- Rathcoole said that he was “deeply concerned and disappointed” following the decision that was made by the council, which was reported in The Echo recently.

The council are asked to reconsider plans to turn the Swiftbrook Paper Mill into a tourist location

“South Dublin County are ignoring the legacy of Swiftbrook which formed a central part of the social and economic life of Saggart Village.

“They are also ignoring how important the site is with regards to National History”, said O’Dwyer.

Swiftbrook Paper Mill in Saggart was established in the mid-eighteenth century and was the location in which the paper for the proclamation was made.

South Dublin County Council said that “It would not be feasible to effectively consider the potential of the mill at Swiftbrook from a tourism perspective” given the lack of connectivity on the Slade Valley Trail and the issues of taking in charge for the Millrace Estate.

O’Dwyer also added that the council are missing out on a “major opportunity” to invest in the tourism potential of Saggart”, which would help the local economy and in turn provide jobs and enterprise opportunities for residents.
