Calls made to ‘accelerate action’ on gender equality
Women’s Collective Ireland Tallaght called for “accelerate action” on gender equality ahead of International Women’s Day.
Their panel talk held at Tallaght Library on Tuesday, March 4, aimed at drawing attention on the stereotypes and discriminations women are still called to put up with, about one century after the first gender equality achievements.
“This year on International Women’s Day, we don’t want cupcakes. We want feminist movements, leaders, policy, active bystanders and societal change,” said WCI Tallaght.
“Hopefully we can all inspire that little by little together.”
Miss Next African Queen Ireland 2024-25 Cloveni Balolo, Tallaght councillor and activist Jess Spear and ROSA Feminist Movement activist and artist Lydia MacBride were among the speakers.
The Lucan branch of Women’s Collective Ireland will also call for action with the “EmpowerHER” workshop in Ballyowen Community Centre on Thursday, March 6 at 7:15pm, facilitated by drummer and mindfulness coach Michelle Kinsella.
Meanwhile, gatherings, exhibitions and presentations are being held across all the South Dublin Libraries, and the celebration of women will go on over the weekend.
On Friday, March 7, the Sister Sheds will host an International Women’s Day Eve in St Mary’s Priory, Tallaght village, from 7pm to 9pm.
Besides dedicating a candlelight to women, attendees will be entertained by local soprano Olivia Luc and storyteller Balor O’Brien “as we celebrate the incredible Irish women of history,” said the group.
Tickets for the Eve are €10 and available on Eventbrite.
On Saturday, March 8, Ballyfermot Youth Service will mark the occasion by hosting a range of women-led activities in Ballyfermot Skate Park.
Dublin Lord Mayor Emma Blain will open the event at 12pm, followed by a “Mini Maze” with DCC Sports Officer Sharon Kelly, a Zumba class, a BMX Display and an aerobics class at 2pm. BBQ and live music will be available.
