THE DSPCA has issued some important information on keeping your pets safe and warm during the cold snap – including the birds.

As heavy snow and very cold temperatures are predicted, the DSPCA Veterinary Hospital has reminded people to keep their pets inside, safe and warm.

Keep your pets inside, safe and warm

According to the Rathfarnham-based shelter, animals need to be kept indoors during the cold snap and thoroughly dried if they get wet.

It is advised to clean animal’s paws if the come into contact with salt or grit and to ensure that microchip details are up-to-date and that the dog or cat is wearing an ID tag.

According to the DSPCA: “If you have animals usually kept outside and it is not possible to bring them in make sure they have a secure warm shelter, food and water at all times.”

An important piece of advice relates to cats, with motorists encouraged to bang on the bonnet of their car before starting the engine, as cats can climb into the engine seeking heat.

Anti-freeze is also poisonous, especially to cats.

Leave high quality seed or fat balls out for birds

People have also been reminded to remember the birds and to leave high quality seed or fat balls, and fresh water, out for our feathered friends.

In case of an emergency, the DSPCA has advised: “Have your vets number saved or written down, some vets don’t provide on-site out of hours services so be aware if you need to travel to an unfamiliar location, have the directions ready before you need them.”
