Communities encouraged to do 2-minute street clean

TALLAGHT Community Council are marking a key milestone this year of holding events in Tallaght to mark the national An Taisce Spring Clean campaign.

Tallaght Community Council (TCC) began marking the national Spring Clean back in 2012 by holding a Stream Clean Day at Watergate along the Whitestown stream.

Since then, TCC are delighted to have seen many individuals and groups across Tallaght come out and participate in spring clean events on their streets, in local parks, schools and sports clubs.

Many litter-busting groups and Tidy Town groups have sprung up all over Tallaght from Hazelgrove to Springfield and Tymon North in the last decade which shows a deepening value Tallaght residents place on having a clean environment to live, work and play in here in Tallaght.

This year, TCC are again encouraging people of all ages, and groups across Tallaght to do a 2-minute street clean or hold a community spring clean in your corner of Tallaght during the week, from Saturday, April 23 to Saturday, April 30. Many hands make light work – and a combined effort for this 1 week in April will yield a positive impact in litter reduction in Tallaght again to mark the national Spring Clean.

“We are encouraged at the increase in groups and individuals who regularly litter pick in their corner of Tallaght in the last few years,” said Peter Daly, TCC member.

“A rising tide lifts all boats, so every litter pick makes a positive contribution to a cleaner environment here in Tallaght. It doesn’t need to be a big half day event to matter, a 2-minute street clean on your way to school or work makes a positive difference.”

TCC are also delighted to announce that the Tallaght village Tidy Towns will be launched in April and May to focus on the village area and begin to tackle the graffiti, litter, areas of maintenance in and greening our historic village now that the Covid-19 restrictions are behind us.

Liz Kennedy, Chair of TCC added: “Our village is an important place, full of history and character. It does however need a strong focus to improve some of the public areas.

“We intend to focus on that in the next 3 months as a committee and invite businesses and residents to get in touch and importantly to get involved. We have already had commitments from several large businesses to help in our village focus this year. Put your shoulder to the wheel and help us, let’s get our village looking fabulous in 2022!”

For people or groups who might not have a few hours to spend litter picking or for large jobs like removing graffiti, the 2 Minute Street Clean is a perfect way to mark An Taisce Spring Clean at a time that suits you. When you are out walking your dog, going to the bus or the shops, take a bag with you and spend 2 minutes picking up some litter from the street or your local park. Then deposit that in the nearest bin, remembering to recycle any cans or plastics if possible.

TCC members are carrying out their own 2-minute street cleans across their corners of Tallaght on that week – so please join them.

Stay tuned to TCC’s social media channels if you want to get involved in that, all ages and all abilities are very welcome to join the village efforts.
