Company happily organises donation to St Rose’s school

THE pupils of St Rose’s National School in Tymon, which is for children with literacy difficulties, received a donation of over €1,250 worth of sports equipment from construction manufacturer Amvic.

The items were presented at a school assembly last Friday, and the donations came about as an Amvic staff member, Cillian Canavan, has a son who attends St Rose’s.

He approached his boss, Amvic Ireland’s MD Pat Martin, about donating to the school and after he visited it on World Dyslexia Day and saw the work they do, he happily organised the donation.

Commenting on what the donation of the sports equipment means to the pupils of St Rose’s, deputy principal Kate Styles said it will help the children to develop their sports abilities.

“The big thing for us is we try to look at the children’s strengths and teach them to develop those strengths . . . and to develop sporting ability,” she told The Echo.

“The donated items include sponge balls, so they can play football, and they got hurdles, goalposts, hoops, and bibs – they can play team sports and develop more self-confidence.

“The children are over the moon about it, they’re so excited and so delighted.

“At the beginning of the school year, you order equipment and by the end of the year it’s all damaged because it’s been used, so to get new equipment, it’s just lovely.

“Every single piece of equipment will be used, and used well.”

Cillian Canavan from Amvic said: “This contribution reflects Amvic Ireland’s ongoing dedication to supporting the community.

“The donation will significantly bolster St Rose’s capacity to provide high-quality education and care to the 60 children it currently serves, but local businesses need to do more.

“This is especially important in a country with limited options for children with learning disabilities.

“It’s surprising to learn that there are only four of these schools in Ireland.”

Amvic has committed to making a similar presentation next year, while the students in St Rose’s are looking forward to getting full use out of the new equipment at their sports day next month.
