Drainage completion on pitches to improve park

THE completion of intensive drainage works on pitches in Butler McGee Park in Springfield, Tallaght, will “add considerably” to the active recreational amenity within the park, according to South Dublin County Council.

As reported in The Echo last April, the pitches in the park, which are used by St Mark’s GAA Club, regularly became flooded and waterlogged following periods of rainfall, hampering the GAA club’s activity.

Butler McGee Park should be considerably improved

The club had to use alternative pitches when they played matches as they could not facilitate home games when the pitches were waterlogged.

Since then, the council has carried out intensive drainage works on one of the pitches, which is now in the re-establishment stage, with hopes that it will “add considerably” to the recreational use of the park.

The council added that they “remain in contact with St Mark’s GAA Club in relation to planned and delivered works within the park as appropriate, and are available to meet should the club wish to request a meeting.”

Other work was also carried out in the park by the council during 2018, including the removal of the vehicular entrance from Drumcairn Parade, which has been replaced with a concrete stub wall and railing.

The boundary fence runs from Drumcairn Parade along Drumcairn Avenue to the junction of Fettercairn Road.

According to the council, the new fencing has led to “a significant reduction” in stolen cars gaining access to the park.

The council supplied this information in response to a question that was submitted by Fianna Fáil councillor Charlie O’Connor at Monday’s monthly meeting of the Tallaght Area Committee, where Cllr O’Connor asked for an update about the park and activities involving St Mark’s GAA Club.
