Drimnagh Castle – one of the most haunted in Europe

DRIMNAGH Castle was deemed to be one of Europe’s most haunted castles.

Research by Ubuy examined tourist reviews and descriptions on TripAdvisor, which include the word ‘haunted’ in relation to the structures.

Drimnagh Castle came in at number five on the list, with many visitors reporting experiences of the supernatural kind when they were there.

It is said that the building is haunted by Eleanora Barnwell, who is roaming the halls in search of her slain love.

Overall, visitor reviews are overwhelmingly positive for Drimnagh Castle and its beautiful gardens, which can be accessed via weekly tours.

The grounds are also available to rent for weddings and private events.

Drimnagh Castle is the only moated castle remaining in Ireland and was once the seat of the de Bernival family.

The de Bernival family were granted lands in Drimnagh and Terenure in the year 1215 by King John.

Thankfully the site was saved in 1986 and refurbishing work was completed in 1991, with the then President Mary Robinson re-opening it.

Today the castle serves primarily as a heritage site, along with guided tours, private functions, and as a film location for the likes of BBC show The Tudors and movie Ella Enchanted (2004).

First place in the Ubuy research went to Castello Sforzesco in Milan.

The Italian castle was cited as the most haunted one in Europe by tourists with ‘The Veiled Lady’ just one of the many apparitions said to live on the castle’s grounds.
