Residents are urged to report any stockpile bonfire material

DUBLIN City Council is calling on residents to report any stockpiled bonfire material with Halloween fast approaching.

Last year, the city council removed 441 tonnes of bonfire materials during the Halloween period – in response to over 432 reports of stockpiling from the public.

Business owners and residents are reminded that they are responsible for their waste and if it is found not to have been disposed of correctly, they could be held liable.

Council departments have deployed crews to facilitate the removal of bonfire material, which will be prioritised on risk.

This includes material that poses a risk to safety and wellbeing of the public, to critical public infrastructure, and material that may become a focal point for major public order issues.

Council crews are on call out of hours to assist gardai and remove material.

Residents who see waste left out, or know of a stockpile, are encouraged to contact Dublin City Council Public Domain on 222 3536 – office hours – and 222 2222 (24 hours).

Alternatively, members of the public can report ‘Bonfire Materials’ online on the Citizen Hub https://citizenhub.dublincity.ie/WasteManagement.

Reports can be made anonymously by following the on-screen instructions, which require a location and a brief description of the amount and type of material, plus any additional relevant information.

If there is imminent danger to life or property dial 999 or 112.

Meanwhile, authorities warn of the likelihood that there will be more injuries associated with the misuse of fireworks.

Prevention tips in the hopes of a safe Halloween around fireworks include – never consume drugs or alcohol when using fireworks – keep children and everyone at a safe distance from the displays/fire –  never return to a lit firework, wait 20 minutes and place in a bucket of water – and never throw fireworks.
