Firefighters cycle 115km to Kilkenny City station

A NUMBER of firefighters working for Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB) cycled from Tallaght Fire Station to Kilkenny City Fire Station to raise funds for LauraLynn, a service providing hospice care to children with life-limiting conditions.

The cyclists and their supporters numbered around twenty and were given an escort by a fire service car throughout the journey.

They reached Carlow were they were met by Carlow firefighters, who also gave them an escort from the outskirts of the town to Carlow Town Fire Station, where refreshments and food were provided for them by their fellow firefighters.

Soon after this opportunity to rest, the cyclists took off once more, continuing to Kilkenny City Fire Station.

Upon reaching their destination, they were yet again provided with a great level of hospitality, this time by Kilkenny firefighters. Hot food, tea and coffee were made available to the firefighters, who also presented a plaque to their hosts in appreciation of the welcoming atmosphere that they have become accustomed to when visiting other fire stations.

In return, Kilkenny firefighters presented a plaque to the Tallaght firefighters for undertaking such a charitable endeavour.

The cycle, which is organised annually by Joe Mulligan of the fire brigade’s D Watch, chose this year to fundraise for LauraLynn, who provide end-of-life care for children suffering with terminal illnesses.

The service, which has been in operation in some shape or form since 1925, is funded primarily by the HSE, although in recent times donations are as important as they’ve ever been.
