THE very first baby to be born in the Coombe Hospital after the bells rang out ushering in 2023, has been welcomed back to receive the Master’s Medal.

Born at 12:55am on New Year’s Day, Nicolas Urban was welcomed into the world at eight pounds, seven ounces, and is the fourth child of Daniel and Malgorzata Urban from Tallaght.

On Wednesday, Master of The Coombe Hospital, Michael O’Connell welcomed two-month-old Nicolas and his family back to the maternity hospital.

Nicolas’ mother, Malgorzata was happy to revisit The Coombe for the event.

“We were so well looked after at The Coombe, it was really special when Nicolas was the first baby born there in 2023,” Malgorzata tells The Echo.

“We were delighted when the Master of The Coombe, Michael O’Connell, invited us back to receive the Master’s Medal.

“It was a really special occasion and the medal is something we will keep forever as a lovely memento of Nicolas’ birthday.”

On what was a special occasion, Professor O’Connell presented The Coombe Hospital’s Master’s Medal, which is given to the first born baby in the hospital each year, to little Nicolas.

Nicolas looked in great form alongside his siblings Emilia, Liam, and Liliana during the ceremonial presentation.

When Nicolas was born, Professor O’Connell was thrilled to see the first baby of the year welcomed by staff at The Coombe.

“We are very pleased to announce the arrival of the first Coombe baby in 2023 at 00.55am this morning,” Professor O’Connell said on January 1.

“Both mother and baby are doing very well and I would like to express my gratitude to the hardworking doctors, midwives and all the associated staff of The Coombe who work to ensure the arrival of, on average, 19 babies every day of the year.

“Today, as well as every day, we are dedicated to providing best-in-class care for mothers and babies. In 2022, we also had to contend with ongoing COVID-19 in the community, a significant cyber attack and, like every other hospital, staffing challenges.

“Our Coombe staff resilience and dedication saw us through it all.

“We look forward to continuing to provide first class care for mothers and babies in 2023 and I wish baby Nicolas and his loving parents Daniel and Malgorzata and his sisters Emelia, Liliana, and brother Liam the very best for the future.”
