Grandad (93) brings some Christmas magic to school

A LOCAL grandfather brought some Christmas magic to Scoil Maelruain Junior in Tallaght on Wednesday morning when he appeared as Santa Claus for the tenth year in a row.

Old Bawn man Paddy Bermingham, 93, first began dressing up as Santa 20 years ago for Christmas events in his parish, before he was invited to bring some Santa sparkle to Scoil Maelruain in 2013.

His involvement in the school came about as his grandchildren attended, and while they’ve since left the school Paddy’s appearances every year as Santa have carried on.

Gillian Doyle, a member of the school’s parents’ association and board of management, told The Echo on Wednesday: “He’s been doing it in the parish for about 20 years, and in the school for ten.

“The kids all light up when he comes in, and it’s wonderful that a community member does this every year.

“Even in lockdown, he still came into the school and stood in the yard, so the kids got their Santa experience – he’s such a gent.

“To be doing this at his age, it’s amazing. The kids sang all the carols for him and the teachers were gathered in the ‘halla’ and played music and everyone had a singalong.

“It reminded me of Christmas in the olden days, with everyone just enjoying the meaning of Christmas and being with their friends and family, instead of being busy buying presents.”

A fire engine also went to the school on the day, and the children all went outside when they heard the sirens and got to explore the fire engine.

They were also treated to selection boxes which Santa handed out, courtesy of the parents’ association who left sacks with the treats in each classroom so every child got one.

Gillian praised Paddy’s commitment to being Scoil Maelruain’s honorary Santa every year, and the delight he brings to the young children.

“Paddy’s still going at 93,” she said. “He brings so much joy to the school, and long after his grandchildren have left, he still does it.”
