Heritage Credit Union introduce ‘Learner Loan’
Heritage Credit Union has introduced a new ‘Learner Loan’, designed to alleviate the financial burden on young members and their families faced with the increasing costs associated with obtaining a full driving licence in Ireland.
Based in Rathfarnham Village, Heritage CU have grown over the last decade, acquiring branches in areas including, Fortfield, Nutgrove Shopping Centre, and Walkinstown.
According to the lender, they recognise the importance of driving “as a rite of passage” and a necessity for education and employment opportunities.
The cost of acquiring a driving licence in Ireland is a significant hurdle for many, with expenses ranging from eye tests, mandatory Essential Driver Training (EDT) sessions, provisional licence applications, the Driver Theory Test, and the driving test itself, often amounting to in the region of €1,000, not to mention the high cost of driving insurance.
The Learner Loan is tailored to spread these costs over a manageable period and aims to make the journey to obtaining a full driving licence more affordable and accessible for learner drivers throughout Heritage CU’s extensive common bond area.
Alan Roche, CEO of Heritage Credit Union, explained, “We understand the challenges our young members face in obtaining their driving licence. This solution is more than just about mobility; it’s about empowering our members to seize opportunities for work, education, and independence. Our ‘Learner Loan’ is not about profit; it’s a testament to our commitment to supporting the members of our community. We’re not just investing in their present; we’re investing in their future.”
Declan Doyle of Top Gear Driving School, believes the Learner Loan is a “beacon of support” providing a “much-needed solution to a widespread concern” in relation to the daunting financial hurdles required to obtain a full licence.
Colm Lawless, Chairperson of Heritage Credit Union, says they are “investing in the education and safety of our members.”
“This scheme is a testament to that belief. By easing the financial burden, we’re not only helping our members achieve their personal milestones, but also contributing to the overall safety and well-being of our community.”
