LED screen technology projects that operate in a safe environment, have “boomed” over the past 12 months, according to a leading light and design company in Ballymount.

High Res Lighting are one of the few leading companies in Europe that provide virtual production and green screen replacement for large film and TV production companies and studios.

Having successfully delivered projects for the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV+, Peter Canning, Design Director and CEO of High Res Lighting, said the LED element of their business, has been a positive aspect for the industry during difficult pandemic times.

“For the film industry, to be able to use LED screens is a big advantage, with the light reflected back onto actor’s faces if it is night or daytime on the screen,” said Mr Canning.

“Before, actors were not able to see images on the green screen, but now they can. It provides a safe environment, so you can bring Malta to you rather than having to go to Malta.

“In the last 12 months this has boomed and we are quoting projects all over Europe.”

A highly innovative company, High Res were able to re-create in Ardmore Studios a recent project for a Director which focused on a story during a Dublin to Galway train journey.

“The Director was a bit worried about the technology, but he was happy with how it worked, and said he would have never been able to reverse the train,” said Mr Canning.

High Res Lighting started out as a pure lighting design company 23 years ago, but expanded over the past few years into the world of virtual production and green screen replacement.

They have been involved in some high profile projects, including the XXII Olympic Winter Games, Sochi, The Best FIFA Football Awards, Riverdance 25th Anniversary and RTE’s 1916 Centenary Concert.

“The FIFA event in Milan in 2019 was pre-programmed here in Ballymount, then we flew out to Milan with the USB stick,” said Mr Canning.

“It is great for the work-flow of people. You are not paying huge amounts for studio time and you can bring producers in.”

Back in 2019, High Res Lightning put in place a seven year business expansion plan, but this was severely rattled by Covid-19 just six months later.

However, on a more positive note, the company recently won the overall prize at this year’s South Dublin Local Enterprise awards, reflective of the quality of their productions to the global TV and film sector.

Looking at moving those expansion plans back on track, Peter Canning said a key aspect for the business, which employs five fulltime and hires freelancers and experts for various projects, is to be “flexible” for a workload that is “quite varied”.

Mr Canning said support from the South Dublin LEO team was “exceptional” and provides the opportunity to “pivot our business and rapidly grow into a new area in 12 months.”
