Late-night service on Luas Red Line looks likely for the Christmas period

By Maurice Garvey

COMMUTERS can expect to avail of a late-night Luas service on the Red Line over the Christmas period.

A lack of late-night service on the Red Line last year – compared to a late-night service on the Green Line – led to claims of “discrimination” by local representatives.

A finalisation of the plan was expected to be approved last Thursday, November 12 by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

However, early indications are that Luas operator Transdev and TII will operate a Red Line night service, on a similar schedule to the Green Line.

A Luas spokesperson admitted to The Echo “that demand hasn’t been there for the Red Line”, but that they are happy to introduce a service this year “to see what the demand looks like.”

Confirmation on the Red Line night service was delivered to councillors, after a motion proposed by independent councillor Paul Hand was passed at the Dublin South Central Area Committee.

Cllr Hand said: “Two-thirds of all revenue generated by Luas comes from Red Line passengers, this shows that the demand is there and it is only fair that these passengers receive an equal service.

“To have a situation where citizens on the Green line were getting a superior service to those using the Red Line was wholly unfair and discriminatory.

Thankfully the Luas operators have stated their commitment to fully restore the Christmas nightly service for the communities served by the Red Line.”
