Local schools impress in hurling and camogie Cumann na mBunscol finals

THERE was success on the double for St Mary’s Rathfarnham in the Cumann na mBunscol hurling and camogie finals in Croke Park on Tuesday.

The Rathfarnham boys, who already claimed the Division One Football, added their second trophy of the campaign by winning the Corn Herald title.

Mary’s got the better of St Lawrence’s from Kilmacud 1-10 to 0-6 in a well-contested decider with Rossa Sweeney starring for the winners with nine points, eight from frees and one from play.

Sweeney, whose dad Tim played for Dublin and Ballyboden St Enda’s and is a nephew of David, never put a foot wrong as his free-taking skills proved a big difference on the day.

Mary’s had plenty of heroes on the day with midfielders Conor McCarthy and Finn McEntee leading the charge while Theo Duggan was the other Mary’s scorer.

The all-important goal arrived in the closing minutes when David Lehane broke through the Lawrence’s defence to guide the sliothar to the back of the net.

Defenders Michael Delahaunty and Toby Marie put in strong performance at the heart of the defence while Theo Duggan played a captain’s role and led by example.

Mary’s have a strong tradition in Cumann na mBunscol finals having previously won the double in 2017 and 2018.

Elsewhere, Gaelscoil Eiscir Riada claimed the Corn Aghais trophy after they edged out Scoil Naithi 2-8 to 2-6.

All of Eiscir Riada points came from frees with captain Fionn o hEarchai who scored four points while centre back Darragh MacEochaidh also scored four points.
