A WOMAN from Rathfarnham who decided to chop 13 inches off her hair raised more than €1,000 for the LauraLynn children’s hospice through a sponsored haircut for a charity that makes wigs for children.

Twenty-year-old Megan McSweeney from Ballyboden, Rathfarnham, decided she wanted to grow her hair long enough to donate her hair to The Little Princess Trust – a UK-based charity that make wigs for free for children in Ireland and the UK who have lost their hair through cancer treatment or other illness.

Speaking with The Echo, Megan says that she has been growing her hair out since 2019 to get it to the required length: “I have been growing my hair for the last two years until it was long enough to be donated and I will be sending 13 inches of my hair to the Little Princess Trust.

“I shared what I was doing on my Facebook and Instagram pages and have raised over €1,000 so far for the LauraLynn hospice for children in Leopardstown. I originally had a goal of €250, so I’ve been completely shocked by the amount of donations I have received.

“I plan to donate my hair again in the next few years as my fundraising went so much better than expected. It’s all for a great cause that can make such an impact for any child who has lost their hair due to any illness.”

Megan’s fundraising page will still be accepting donations until next January – if you would like to donate you can go to https://www.idonate.ie/MeganMcSweeney262
